International year of millets
Millets
Millets are a group a small, round whole
grains grown in India, Nigeria, and other Asian and African countries.
Considered as less processed then modern grains, they are used both for human
consumption and livestock and bird feed.
These are very high in terms of their nutritional content. As for proteins, minerals, and vitamins, each Millet is three to five times nutritionally better than rice and wheat. Millets are rich in B vitamins, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, zinc, and gluten-free. They have a low GI, so millets are ideal for wheat allergies/intolerance in humans. Weight loss millets are also suitable for diabetics.
Types of millets
There are two categories of millets namely
Small millets
Large millets
Small millets-
- kodo
- barnyard
- little
- Guinea
- browntop
- fonio
- adlay (or Job’s tears)
Large millets-
- pearl
- foxtail
- proso
- finger (or ragi)
During g20 summit 3 types of millets were discussed-
1- Ragi- Finger
Millet or Ragi is a cereal widely consumed by the people of south India and
many African countries. It is known as a wonder grain for weight loss. It is
rich in calcium and has high fibre content. It is considered to be the best aid
for people suffering from diabetes. It is also a common baby food in south
India. Babies that are 28 days old are fed ragi porridge and this helps in easy
digestion. This will help strengthen the baby’s bones by providing high calcium
and iron to the body.
2- Bajra- Bajra, also known as
Pearl millet, is a widely grown type of millet. It grows in various
shades of white, yellow, grey, brown and bluish -purple. It is also called
as Sajjalu in Telugu, Kambu in Tamil, Sajje in
Kannada and Kambam in Malayalam. Pearl millet is a rich source of phosphorus, which
plays an important part in the structure of body cells. Consumption of pearl
millets helps in minimizing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Being a good source of
magnesium, millets act as a cofactor in a number of enzymatic reactions.
3- Proso millet- Proso-millet (Kodo Millet) is an underutilized crop which is highly nutritious cereal grain used for human consumption, bird seed, and/or ethanol production. Grains of proso Millet are a rich source of vitamins (niacin, B-complex vitamins, and folic acid), minerals (PCa, Zn, Fe) and essential amino acids (methionine and cysteine), starch, and phenolic compounds like antioxidants and Beta-glucan. Seeds also contain components with healing benefits, which decrease the level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in blood and injury to the liver and high lecithin content which supports the neural health system.
